Winter 19/20- covering stories in the news from December 2019- March 2020 include: the assassination of Qasem Sulimani and repercussions including the passenger plane crash killing 176, and the loss of 60 lives in a stampede at his funeral; fighting bushfires in Australia and the story of aborigines staying put to care for their elderly who were unable to evacuate; riots in India against the Citizenship Act; dozens die as a second avalanche in eastern Turkey hits rescue workers; the Idlib bloodbath; a flash flood in Indonesia’s capital killing 30; and Germany mourns as 9 killed in far-right racist shooting in Hanau.

The Winter season’s love stories are taken from a commuter valentine message in the Metro newspaper and Brad and Jen being seen together briefly at the Screen Actors Guild. The Palace event of the season is Meg and Harry quitting royal life. In remembrance for basketball player Kobe Bryant, Python Terry Jones, actor Kirk Douglas and reality show presenter Caroline Flack. We mark the 75th Anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz. Big Ben rang out the New Year in London, in an otherwise silent year. Boris’s speech welcomed 2020 on "a wave of optimism” promising a fantastic year with lots to look forward to while Covid-19 spread. The first mention of it was on 4th January as a Sars-like virus in China (page 40 of The Times). The awards season continues with history being made by the Korean film Parasite, the first foreign film to win best film at The Oscars. Harvey Weinstein also made history “With Weinstein’s conviction the age of sexual immunity is dead”. And record breakers include Finley Molloy, a golden retriever from New York State who broke his own Guinness World Record by holding 6 instead of 5 tennis balls in his mouth.
